JOE Edwards believes Millwall just lacked the quality in front of goal to grab a point away at Hull.
An early goal by Jaden Philogene for the Tigers saw the Lions go 1-0 down and they initially struggled to get a foothold in the game.
But they gradually improved as the march went on with Zian Flemming almost chipping the Hull keeper before Tom Bradshaw had a big chance saved in the final seconds of the match.
Reacting to the game in his post-match press conference, Edwards said: “It was a tough game. A lot of very good players in that Hull team, a style of play that was very clear and that can make it difficult for you. It becomes even more difficult when they get that dream start. A minor error from us around our own box, a fantastic strike against the bar, rebound falls for them. And you could see they had momentum from there and there was a lot of movement and rotation to take the ball away from you which can feel frustrating.
“And it’s a big test of when you regain the ball, what can you do with it? And we didn’t quite find a good balance with it. There were times when we won it back and tried to play short and gave it away and then other times when it was really on to go into the front or go in behind and ask a different question and we didn’t do that enough.
“Hull were very dominant in that first half and deserved the lead and then we spoke about a few of those points at half-time. We made some changes and second half I thought was a far more even game. They still have spells where they look comfortable on the ball [but] very little creativity from them – I don’t remember our goalkeeper making a save in the second half. And then we started threatening their backline more and playing forward and we get the moment where Zian Flemming has a big-ish chance just over the bar and then Tom Bradshaw nearly nicks us a point in the final minutes.
“Disappointing to lose the game and we obviously haven’t won a game in a while now. But what from half an hour in looks like it could be a difficult day because of the way Hull were dominating, it was a good response from our boys and big credit to the boys that came off the bench. When you’re a sub and you’re disappointed to be a sub, there’s only one thing to do and that’s make an impact on the game.
“Certainly our changes did that and I think we were good value for our money in the second half just without that quality to get a goal.”
