JIMMY Abdou’s AFC Wimbledon took a huge step towards securing their survival in League One after they defeated south London rivals Charlton on Tuesday night.
Lyle Taylor got the only goal of the game in first-half injury-time to halt Charlton’s play-off charge under Lee Bowyer.
Abdou was on the bench as the Dons moved four points clear of danger. Charlton are sixth, level on points with Portsmouth.
On Saturday Abdou came on in the 78th minute of the 1-1 draw at home to Scunthorpe.
Sid Nelson’s Chesterfield are in real danger of dropping out of league football after two setbacks this week. Nelson was on the bench for the Spireites as they drew 2-2 at Morecambe on Tuesday night after playing in the centre of defence in last Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Grimsby, one of the teams they are trying to catch.
Chesterfield are bottom of League Two, five points off Forest Green in 22nd with a game in hand.
James Brown played the full game for Carlisle at right-back on Saturday. Kris Twardek came on as a 35th-minute substitute but couldn’t help Keith Curle’s side break down Swindon in a game that ended goalless.
The Cumbrians are four points off the fourth-tier play-offs.
In National League South, Jamie Philpot was involved in a crunch promotion clash for Welling United against Hemel Hempstead on Wednesday night.
Striker Philpot thought he had put his side ahead but saw his goal ruled out for offside. Welling are eighth, a place and three points off Hemel who occupy the last play-off place.
On Saturday, Philpot played up front as Welling lost 1-0 at home to Havant & Waterlooville.
Also last weekend, goalkeeper Harry Girling helped Cheshunt to a 2-1 win at Mildenhall Town. Cheshunt are 22nd in Isthmian League North, three points above Norwich United and Romford as they aim to beat the drop.
