SHAUN Williams has insisted Millwall’s season won’t peter out – because the squad won’t let it happen.
The Lions are five points off the top six after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat against West Brom and ahead of the London derby clash with Fulham on Wednesday night.
Williams insists Millwalll are still in the play-off picture despite the weekend’s defeat.
“No I don’t think so,” Williams said when asked if the Lions’ season could fade. “The group of lads and the staff are all working hard to succeed and we aren’t looking at it as settling for what we have.
“We probably didn’t help ourselves [against West Brom] with sloppy errors and stuff like that, but they showed their quality with the first goal and they could have had a few more.
“Maybe the luck of the bouncing ball, any time one of us was getting tackled it was falling to their spare man, it was just one of those games.
“I don’t think we gave a good account of ourselves [Sunday], compared to what our normal standards are. We didn’t really have much of a go and it showed in the performance.”
The conditions were difficult at The Den, with wind and rain buffeting the stadium.
“As soon as we came out for the warm-up it was hectic,” Williams said, “but it was the same for both teams and they played the conditions better than we did. We were quite sloppy with the ball and they did to us what we normally do to teams.
“Individual errors cost us during the game, they’re confident, they’re top of the league for a reason.
“We’ve got to dust ourselves down, not dwell on it too much. We’ve played Leeds and West Brom and got beat by both, so we just need to go back to basics and put in a good performance [against Fulham].”
Williams recently signed a new deal. He said: “I’m over the moon. That will take me to nearly 35 [years old]. I’ve been here quite a long time. I’d like to thank the manager and staff for giving me that opportunity.”
