SHAUN Williams scored on his competitive international debut but it wasn’t enough to save the Republic of Ireland as they were thrashed 4-1 by Wales.
Ryan Giggs’ Wales were 4-0 up by the 55th minute of their Uefa Nations League Group B4 qualifier after goals from Tom Lawrence, Garth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts.
Williams came on two minutes after the fourth goal, replacing Conor Hourihane in midfield.
In the 66th minute Williams took it upon himself to press high up the pitch and he robbed Ramsey of the ball before running through and dinking brilliantly over goalkeeper Wayne Hennessy.
It was Williams’ second cap for his country and his goal was the only bright moment on a poor night for Ireland.
