GEORGE Saville said Millwall are their “own worst enemy” after they let Sunderland off the hook in the 2-2 draw on Saturday.
Saville’s two goals from free-kicks had put his side 2-1 ahead at the break, but Jordan Archer’s mistake from Adam Matthews’ cross helped the Black Cats pull level.
Saville was supportive of Archer afterwards, saying “we win together and we lose together”, as he admitted the Lions should have notched their first away win of the campaign.
“It’s a point to take home but we’re disappointed we can’t take all three. On balance of play, it’s probably a fair result,” Saville said.
“I had a bit of a helping hand from the goalkeeper with the first goal and the second one had more pace on it.
“I haven’t watched them back but I liked the second one, even though he got a hand to it.
“If you hit the target, you get the goal and you get rewarded, so I’m just grateful it went in.
“I really believed we could go on to win the game, especially towards the end of the first half.
“We were pushing on and we had a period of 10-15 minutes where we looked really good going forward.
“Conceding so early in the second half away from home is the last thing you need.
“That gave them the momentum in the second half. It’s a mistake. Jord (Jordan Archer) won’t be happy and he’ll be the first to say it was his fault.
“But we win together and we lose together – we’ll pick him up and go again on Tuesday [against Hull City].
“There are a few positives to take out of today. We were our worst enemy sometimes but it’s a point and we move on.”
Savile made his first Northern Ireland start over the international break, but was left devastated after the 1-0 aggregate defeat to Switzerland denied them a place in the World Cup in Russia next year.
He said: “I’ve come in over the last couple of months and the last week in Switzerland was great on a personal level.
“It was probably the worst I’ve ever felt coming off a pitch. It was not a nice feeling but I gave what I could for the team and my country, so I’m looking forward to going back.
“It’s a shame we didn’t qualify but my focus now is on Millwall.
“There are no more internationals until next March but the Christmas period will get busy with Millwall, so it’s time to climb up that table, get a few wins and see where it can take us.”
