ENDING the season on a high is the priority for these sides as Millwall travel to the DW Stadium looking to do the double over their northern opponents this season.
Millwall’s safety was confirmed last weekend after Rotherham’s defeat away at West Brom. Wigan secured their Championship status after an impressive run of form, which saw them draw against Norwich and beat Leeds at Elland Road, despite playing the majority of the latter game with 10 men.
Both teams could make lots of changes with very little to play for on the final day. Millwall’s defeat to Bristol City on Tuesday night saw three academy players – Jesse Debrah, George Alexander and Billy Mitchell – included on the substitutes bench and all three will be pushing to make a first senior appearance on Sunday.
Wigan’s danger men are likely to be Gavin Massey, who scored both goals in the 2-1 triumph against Leeds, and Leon Clarke, who is also a name familiar to Millwall fans. He was linked with a loan move from Sheffield United to The Den in January but joined the Latics, for whom he scored three goals in 15 appearances.
Wigan boast one of the best home records in the league, only losing four home games all season and accumulating 78 per cent of their points this campaign at their own ground. They are undefeated in their last four league games and haven’t lost at home in the league since New Year’s Day, winning four out of their nine games there since then.
In contrast, Millwall have failed to win any of their last six league games and they haven’t won away since the middle of March, when a Ben Thompson brace gave his side a 2-0 win over Birmingham.
Jed Wallace is likely to miss out again for Millwall after boss Neil Harris revealed he had been struggling with a knee injury. Harris also said that the wide man had injured his calf during the warm-up against Stoke City.
Millwall are also without the injured Tom Bradshaw, Murray Wallace, Aiden O’Brien and Thompson.
Fred Onyedinma and Ben Marshall were left out on Tuesday and are unlikely to be included on Sunday.
Millwall haven’t lost to Wigan since the FA Cup semi-final in April 2013, winning four and drawing three of the seven meetings between the sides since then.
