Surrey Quays shopping centre has launched a free training programme to help youngsters in Rotherhithe kick-start a career in retail.
The five-week Bright Lights Starting Out in Retail scheme will give young people access to industry experts, CV workshops as well as a personal mentor.
They can also gain on-the-experience with some of the biggest brands housed at the retail centre.
Ian Moore, centre manager at Surrey Quays, said: “The Bright Lights Starting Out in Retail programme can have a real impact on the lives of young people in our community, helping them to discover their potential and gain valuable experience about what it’s like to work in a fast-paced retail environment.”
Those that are interested need to attend a taster day on October 3, which they can register for on the Surrey Quays website.
Everyone who takes part will get a BTEC Level 1 Retail Knowledge, which will be presented to them at a celebration event on the Friday 9 November.
Mr Moore added: “I’d encourage any young people living in Rotherhithe who is looking for employment to sign up to the Taster Session on 3rd October, so they can take a step to kick-start their retail careers.”
Dianne Wainwright, Head of Operations at The Source Skills Academy, said: “Our free training programme is a great chance for young people in Rotherhithe to gain nationally recognised qualifications, as well as experience what it’s like to work with some of the UK’s biggest retail brands.
“So far, more than 330 people have progressed through our Bright Lights Starting Out programme, with almost 70% moving on to paid employment following their training.”
The programme is funded by Surrey Quays’ owner, British Land, and is delivered in partnership with training agency The Source Skills Academy.
