The new foundations for the new swimming pool in Canada Water have been laid as redevelopment starts to take shape, writes Jack Friend…
The new eight-lane twenty-five-metre swimming pool is part of a wider regeneration plan in Canada Water with Southwark Council aiming to deliver a new state-of-the-art town centre, with a new high street.
The leisure centre will also have a pool for learners as well as a gym, three studios and a four-court hall space. But it will mean that the larger pool at Seven Island will go and this leisure centre will replace it.
The new leisure centre is set to open its doors to the public for the first time in early 2025.
Rebuild don’t replace Seven Islands Leisure Centre, urge residents
Cllr Alice Macdonald, cabinet member for equalities, neighbourhoods and leisure said: “I’m really excited to see how well the pool of the new Canada Water leisure centre is progressing. Residents of all ages can look forward to enjoying the new state-of-the-art centre. We’ve committed to bring all our leisure services in-house to enable us to continue supporting many more people to live healthier lives. This will include the brand new leisure centre at Canada Water.’

Emma Cariaga, Joint Head of Canada Water Development, from British Land the developers behind the massive regeneration project said, “The new leisure centre we are building for Southwark Council will offer a wide range of activities for people who live and spend time in the area. The learner pool will even have a moveable floor to make it suitable for all ages and abilities.
“We’re committed to ensuring that our development supports active and healthy lifestyles both by providing new public spaces, and by supporting access to leisure and recreational facilities that everyone can enjoy. We’re really excited to bring forward this modern facility to support the evolving health and wellbeing offer here at Canada Water.”
