A Rotherhithe-based theatre company that offers free community theatre to any age has been named as this year’s best charity in the borough.
London Bubble Theatre Company has been offering community theatre for all for 50 years. They work with the community to find ways of telling the stories of people who feel unheard in society.
Lucy Bradshaw, executive director of Bubble said: “All our activities are free to take part in, which makes London Bubble different from other companies. We never audition and we never charge our members.”
“Given the cost of living crisis it’s more important than ever to reduce barriers to people taking part in creative activities which support good mental health.
“The children we work with are often referred from schools or social services. Lots of them don’t have the tools to communicate. They have a voice, but are not given the opportunity to express it.
“They may not have many adults they feel they can trust – maybe they’re in-care or in the youth justice system.”
“This is all about giving them a space to do all of this – and have fun.”
Rotherhithe-based mum, Jasmia Robinson said a Bubble summer holiday club improved her daughter’s confidence. “Mia-Rose, is an only child, so during the pandemic she couldn’t interact much with other kids. She’d started biting her nails and was really out of touch with socialising when she did go back to school.
“But after going to the drama week at Bubble, her confidence improved massively – and she’d stopped biting her nails. She loved being there – the staff are incredible.
“I really think they provide something that’s necessary in the community. It’s opened up a local circle – and gives us the chance to meet our neighbours.”
Bubble has something for all ages. “Someone could be 8 or 80 – we have something for them,” Lucy said.
The award for Best Charity in the borough was presented last week at the Southwark Business Excellence Awards, held in Elephant and Castle. Lucy added: “Winning the award is great recognition for us – we’re a small company compared to larger ones in the borough. It’s even more special that we’ve won it in our 50th year of serving the community.”
