MILLWALL have dismissed Joe Edwards just four months into his managerial reign at The Den.
The former Chelsea and Everton coach replaced Gary Rowett in November, but four straight league defeats have left the Lions just one point above the relegation zone.
Edwards led Millwall to victory only four times in 19 fixtures and fans made their frustrations clear by booing off the side at half-time during Saturday’s 2-0 home loss to fellow strugglers Sheffield Wednesday.
That alarming slump has prompted today’s decision to call time on Edwards’ brief stint in charge, with relegation a real possibility back to League One for the first time since 2017.
Assistant manager Andy Meyers has also departed the club.
Chairman James Berylson said: “This has of course been a very tough time and it is not a decision that we have taken lightly.
“Joe has worked incredibly hard during his spell with us and it is with sincere regret that the move hasn’t worked out for both parties in the way we had anticipated.
“I cannot praise him highly enough for his professionalism, standards, values, and work ethic, and I am confident he will have a long and successful career as a Head Coach.
“I would like to thank Joe and Andy for everything they’ve done for the club and wish them every success for the future.”
There is no official confirmation yet of Neil Harris’ appointment as Edwards’ successor, but Millwall’s record goal scorer is expected to be unveiled soon for a second spell in the SE16 dugout.
Harris had been in charge of Cambridge United since December after losing his job at Gillingham earlier in the campaign and has now been handed the task of keeping Millwall up with just 13 games remaining.
The first of those comes at Southampton this Saturday where the Lions will be looking to avoid a fifth straight league loss for the first time since 2015.
How on Earth is Aldridge still in a job. It was his idea to go in a new direction. It was his idea to approach and interview Edwards. He is head of recruitment. Yet once again he escapes any criticism. This is the same bloke who sneakily arranged a job at Stoke and left us in the shit a week before the transfer window a few years back. He should be the first out of the door. He is to blame for this farce of a season Totally out of his depth. Pub teams are run better
