SHAUN WILLIAMS says the new style of play Gary Rowett is trying to implement at Millwall “suits me down to the ground”.
Rowett wants the side to be less direct than under his predecessor Neil Harris and Williams was on the end of a flowing move in the 1-1 draw at Birmingham on Saturday to fire the Lions ahead.
Blues equalised through Jake Clarke-Salter but Williams felt Millwall deserved to win.
“I think we had that many good chances, and obviously their keeper had a great game, I think we should won,” Williams said.
“We’re being encouraged now to build up play and not just play more direct, so it’s suiting me down to the ground.
“We have different press triggers. A lot of the time they gave the ball away quite sloppily in the first half and a couple of times in the second half and we didn’t capitalise on that [Saturday].
“We’ve tried different formations against different teams and everybody’s on the same hymn sheet.
“At Swansea the way we were set up worked perfectly, and everybody kind of stepped back and said the gaffer’s proper on it.”
Millwall only had 14 senior outfield players available on Saturday, and Williams was also struggling the day before.
He explained: “I pulled out of training [Friday] so I was just taking all sorts of tablets and what have you for [Saturday].
“I don’t know what it was, it (his hip) just flared up and I couldn’t move. We are down to the bare bones at the minute but I’m not as bad as the others. We just have to pull our sleeves up and get on with it.”
Williams’ goal was his first of the season. His effort, fired in from 25 yards, was picked as the goal of the weekend in the Championship.
“Yeah, look, it was a good hit. I can’t go around anyone. So I just hit it and luckily enough it went in.”
