BILLY Mitchell believes a number of new players could join Millwall to rejuvenate the squad ahead of the new Championship season.
The Lions have already signed Kevin Nisbet from Hibernian and recruited Joe Bryan on a free deal after his contract ran out at Fulham.
The pair were involved in a behind closed doors friendly against Bromley at Calmont Road on Tuesday as they experienced their first outings as Millwall players.
Mitchell is confident that more stars could follow the pair to The Den and push the club on.
He told Millwall TV: “We obviously came close last season. We put that behind us.
“There’s going to be a lot of good signings coming in the building, we already have a couple of great ones that have joined us, the team gets better year on year. I feel confident it’s going to be a good season.
“I think every time you come close – which have been the last few years – you gain a little more experience, a little bit more know-how, more of an ability to do it under pressure.
“So we’ve put it behind us. I feel like every season we’re going to get that much closer and this year could be the year.”
Millwall boss Gary Rowett fielded two different XIs in each half against Bromley and Mitchell, 22, was grateful to get some minutes under his belt.
He added: “It felt pretty good, all the lads looked pretty good, overall it is quite positive so looking forward to a few more games and building up the minutes gradually to be prepared come that first game of the season.”
The midfielder also paid tribute to Millwall owner John Berylson after the chairman died in an accident in America at the age of 70 last week.
Mitchell said: “I’m just going to echo what everyone else has said. It’s obviously tragic, I’m personally devastated and everyone involved with the club is devastated.
“I feel incredibly privileged to have played my whole Millwall career under his tenure. He’s done fantastic things for this club and he’ll be greatly missed.”
