NEIL Harris said it’s up to Tom Elliott to “battle hard” for a place on the bench if he is still with the club beyond September 2.
Elliott made his comeback from a hamstring injury when he played the first half of an under-23 Professional Development game at Leeds on Monday which the Lions lost 3-2.
He saw a move to Ipswich fall through recently, and clubs below the Championship can still make loan signings.
“Nothing’s changed with Tom,” Harris said. “He played 45 minutes Monday at Leeds. He had no problems in his hamstring. He’s been great, really, really sharp.
“We’ve gone slowly with him getting him back into the fold just to make sure there are no repercussions with the injury.
“He’s fit and healthy and will probably play 70 minutes next Monday [against Nottingham Forest at Calmont Road]. Once he’s done that he’s had 30 minutes [in a behind-closed-doors game], 45 minutes at Leeds and 70 minutes again. He’s then ready for first-team activities.
“Nothing’s changed in the scenario. If anything crops up that suits Tom and suits Millwall then he may move on.
“But if it doesn’t and Tom’s here on September 3, then great. He’s a big part of the squad and popular with the group. He’s liked by the staff and the players and will crack on. He’ll battle hard to get himself in the team or on the bench.”
