A new Butterfly House opens its doors at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill on August 14.

It will be home to hundreds of free-flying butterflies in a tropical indoor garden, including rare species from around the world such as the Horniman’s Swallowtail.

Visitors can also get up close and watch the butterflies hatch in the puparium as they learn about the insect’s life cycle.

The opening follows months of construction, with more than 60 exotic species planted in the indoor garden and staff given specialist training in butterfly care.

The Butterfly House will be open throughout the year. Tickets are on sale from August 5 at www.horniman.ac.uk/butterflyhouse or in person at the Museum and cost £6, with a family price of £15 for two adults and two children.
