BYRON Webster admitted he could have considered his Millwall future had they not won promotion to the Championship last weekend.
Webster was the subject of an enquiry from Sheffield United last summer which was rebuffed by Millwall.
Webster’s wife, Katie, their two kids and his parents live in the north of England, and after the 1-0 win over Bradford at Wembley on Saturday he thanked Neil Harris for his understanding concerning his family situation.
He also expressed his gratitude for his “superstar” partner.
“I can’t speak highly enough for my wife, she does a lot,” Webster said. “I’ve got two young kids and it’s tough. There’s no getting away from it, it’s very tough.
“The only reason they’ve gone north is because I need to get my little girl settled in school. My wife has those two to look after, she has part-time work. She really is a superstar.
“It is tough being away but it benefits us all in the long run as a family.”
Webster, 30, said failure to go up after two seasons in League One could have caused him to think about continuing his Millwall career.
“Possibly…possibly,” he admitted.
He added: “But I might still have to think about it now. Football is a crazy sport. They might not want me. Going up to the Championship they might not think I can do it. You never know.”
Webster played a season in the Championship after winning promotion from League One with Yeovil Town in 2013.
He joined Millwall in 2014 but struggled and spent the latter part of that season back on loan at his former club.
“I don’t need to prove to anyone, the only ones I need to do that to are my family,” he said. “My kids were here [Sunday]. It’s such a special moment. I did it with Yeovil, we came here and won. I came to Millwall and thought, ‘I’ll kick on here’. It didn’t work in the Championship for whatever reason.
“I came back from adversity. I was getting hammered by the fans. It wasn’t nice. I’m not saying I’m going to be [as liked as] the gaffer, but they like me.
“I want to play in the Championship. I feel I deserve to play in the Championship. So we’ll see.”
